Post-divorce a co-parenting relationship can be hard enough without adding more stress into the equation. Being able to work with your co-parent makes the situation a lot easier.

Fortunately, there are several things that you can do that will help make things easier for both the adults and the children who are involved.

As you’re thinking about the parenting plan terms you want in your agreement, including the parenting time schedule, be sure that you’re making the decisions that are best for the children. They must remain your priority throughout the process. You shouldn’t ever try to set things up in a way that will be the most difficult for your ex.

So what can you do to make things easier for everybody? Here’s one major tip:

Simplify the back-and-forth process

One thing that can lead to stress is trying to keep track of a bunch of things that are going back and forth between the homes. Instead of doing that, keep clothing and other essential items at each home to minimize what’s brought back and forth.

Some items, such as prescriptions and school supplies, might have to go from house to house. This will take planning to make sure that the kids have what they need regardless of what home they’re currently occupying.

Getting everything situated with your co-parent as quickly as you can after the split is important because it enables your children to get the stability they need. It’s imperative that you get the parenting plan in place so that both adults have the terms before them and know what they’re responsible for. It isn’t always easy to come up with the terms of the plan. Working with someone who’s familiar with these matters is beneficial since they can help you to come up with terms that fit your child’s needs.
